Prof. Plate receives a parting gift from Rector Osterwalder

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. e.H. Erich J. Plate retired from the Advisory Committee (AC) of UNU-EHS during the fourth AC meeting that took place 24-25 September 2009. He had been a member since the inauguration of the committee in 2003 when UNU-EHS was founded.

In a speech, Prof. Dr Konrad Osterwalder , Rector of the United Nations University and ex-officio member of the UNU-EHS AC, warmly thanked Prof. Plate for his valuable advice and support and wished him all the best.

Prof. Plate, who turned 80 this July, has enriched the work of the UNU-EHS AC with his wide-ranging expert knowledge in the field of hydrology, water resources planning and measurement technology. He has extensive teaching experience, having taught at the Colorado State University and the University of Karlsruhe.

His connection to people at UNU-EHS goes back a long time. Prof. Plate acted as Ph.D. supervisor for Dr. Janos Bogardi, former Director of UNU-EHS and Vice Rector in Europe ad interim.

At the same time, the UNU-EHS AC was joined by a new member, Dr. Jill Jäger, Senior Scientist at the Sustainable Europe Research Institute (SERI) in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Jäger’s work focuses on sustainability assessment and the linkages between science and policy in the area of environmental change.

UNU-EHS AC members are appointed by the UNU Rector. They meet once a year and advise the UNU-EHS Director, especially on the formulation and realization of the academic programme to ensure the efficiency of UNU-EHS.
